Recent dinners

At Kitch’s request, I’m posting some pics of a couple of recent dinners I’ve made.

One thing I’ve realized over the course of this challenge is just how all over the place my diet is. I’ve always thought that I eat *fairly* healthy, as in healthy foods (which is mostly true), but I’m also all over the place on daily calorie intake, daily veggie intake, daily meals, etc. Now, reading info on IF makes me think I shouldn’t worry about it so much, but I think that overall it has a detrimental effect on my diet. I may make a stellar dinner one night, but earlier in the day all I’ve eaten was some fig bars, maybe a bowl of cereal with hemp milk, etc. Not a very balanced plan, and probably says a lot about why I struggle with sleepiness during the day.

I bought a Five Dot ranch flank steak at the Co-op, and made half of it on Friday night, and the other half on Sunday (last) night. I marinated it for about 30 minutes in olive oil, salt, pepper, and a powdered spiced rub I have. I bbq’d it (best purchase I’ve made in a while!), and then baked a potato in the microwave and put non-dairy, non-soy Earth Balance on it, and served steamed broccoli (Friday) or brussel sprouts sauteed with garlic and shallots (Sunday). I think if I just use a yam or a sweet potato instead of the potato, I’ll be good to go. Highly recommend!

    Nice!

I have been playing around with a lot of spices…created a spice rub with chili powder, a little cayenne pepper, cumin, and a lot of spicy Israeli paprika. Put it on my skinless chicken breasts and holy moly was it good! Last week used za’atar, a fantastic Middle Eastern spice with hyssop, sumac, and sesame, on some boneless, skinless chicken breast.

I brought back about $50 worth of kosher bison and extra lean beef from New York a couple weeks ago, and made my first batch (some ground beef). Boy, did I miss red meat! If I talk myself into it, I *might* order some kosher grassfed beef online.

Max introduced me to Elana’s Pantry, a gluten-free cooking blog, which has a lot of great recipes as well.

Tara — it’s pretty easy to be all over the map with calorie intake what with a busy schedule and constantly trying to mix it up.

Having started out Zoning myself when I lost all my extra weight — I usually find myself thinking in terms of blocks, even when I’m primal. I’m not trying to keep Zone ratios, but it’s helpful and gives me an idea of where I’m at. On the flip side of things, I think I tend to be pretty boring with my food choices for that same reason.

That said, I’ve been trying to kick it up a notch at least 2x per week and cook a recipe based meal of some sort. So far so good and it’s fun.

I agree with Kitch about the Zone blocks…no matter how much I hate the Zone and all its wickedness. It really does give you a sense of how much of each macro you’re eating.

you listen to Robb Wolf’s podcasts at all? Super great stuff

IF is definitely fun and useful. Make sure you eat lots of delicious meat and saturated fats and some yammy/berry goodness. Them’s my rules
