Things go awry. I've seen friends / clients in tears from missing a test day goal, never mind say...not making the all around competiton in women's gymnastics where there have been thousands of training days and really just one game day. If you fall short, was it a waste? It'd be harsh to characterize it that way, even it was years of effort.
